Balafon Pronounced BAL-a-fone, is closely associated with the peoples of Senegal and The Gambia from West Africa. The keys are cut from hard wood and suspended on a wooden frame wrapped with rope or leather. The calabash gourd resonators of graduated sizes under the keys create a continuous sweet sound caused by a small hole in each gourd covered with a membrane made of a paper thin spider’s egg case.

Shakere The shakere is a hand held percussion instrument made from a hollowed out calabash gourd, covered with beads or seeds. It is not necessarily shaken - the beaded area rests in the palm of one hand while the other hand twists the gourd, making a swishing sound. The crisp sound that comes from this type of shaker is a wonderful compliment to a traditional African drum ensemble. A popular instrument, used extensively throughout all of Africa, the shakere produces a muted shaker sound that can be either very subdued or very loud.
